Household Hazardous Waste Event

Mesa residents looking for a way to get rid of old cans of paint, batteries, pesticides, electronics, tires and prescription drugs are invited to bring these and other household hazardous waste materials to City sponsored collection events. The next event will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 17 at the East Mesa Service Center, 6935 E. Decatur St. (east of Power Road, north of University). There is no cost to take advantage of this service. Household hazardous waste will only be accepted during the event dates and times and residents are asked to remain in their vehicles and refrain from smoking at all times while at the collection site.

Waste should be sealed in its original container if possible, and unmarked containers should be labeled if the contents are known.

• Adhesives

Industrial waste, radioactive material, explosives, large truck tires and trash will not be accepted. Collected materials will either be recycled, reused or disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner.

Courtyard Marriott Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport

A groundbreaking ceremony was held October 2, 2014, for a Courtyard by Marriott hotel that will be located adjacent to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport.

“Courtyard by Marriott is a great addition to the Gateway area and another sign of the growing success of southeast Mesa,” Mesa Mayor, and Airport Authority Board member John Giles said. “Travelers flying in to Gateway for business or pleasure will have a convenient place to stay with easy freeway access just outside the entrance to the airport.”

The hotel, located on Ray Road east of Power Road, is designed for business travelers but will also accommodate families.  All 99 rooms will include a desk and hospitality cabinet with microwaves and refrigerators.  The hotel will also feature a conference center, business center, full-service restaurant, 24-hour “mini-mart” and an outdoor pool and patio area.

“Breaking ground on this hotel is another important step in the growth of the Gateway area,” District 6 Councilmember Scott Somers said.  “The addition of a Marriott property to one of the fastest growing locations in the valley shows the commitment the City Council has made to making this a destination area in the State of Arizona.”

Courtyard by Marriott is being built by Sunridge Hotel Group, a Mesa-based hospitality development and management company.  It will be the ninth property built by Sunridge in Arizona and the first in Mesa.

“This is a great location for our newest hotel project and we look forward to serving the Gateway community,” Sunridge Chairman and CEO Paul Welker said.  “Marriott is one of the most respected brands in the hospitality industry and the hotel will be ideal for both the business and leisure travelers.”

Richardson Design Partnership was selected as the architect and Porter Brothers is the general contractor for the hotel.  There is a historical connection involving Porter Brothers.  Bill Porter, grandfather of current owners Dennis and Gary Porter, was in charge of construction at Williams Air Force Base, which eventually made a successful transition to become Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport

The Courtyard by Marriott is scheduled to open in October, 2015.

 

Mesa Arizona 2014-15 Schools Start August 6, Watch For Pedestrian Students

Wednesday, August 6, marks the first day of school for thousands of Mesa students, which means it’s time for parents, teachers, neighbors and drivers to think about school zone safety. The City of Mesa Transportation Department would like to offer some reminders.

Safety around schools is everyone’s responsibility. Children can be unpredictable and, because they are smaller in size, can be harder for drivers to see. They cannot accurately judge speed, distance or the direction that sounds are coming from. Drivers especially need to be aware and make road safety a priority by observing the speed limit and paying attention to school zones and parking signs during school hours.

For motorists, keep these tips in mind:
· Do not eat, drink, text, talk on a cell phone or have any other distraction while driving. Make school zones “No Phone Zones.”
· Look for flashing yellow lights that remind drivers to reduce speeds when school is in session.
· No passing is allowed in the15 mph crosswalk zone.
· Watch for children on bikes, walking, getting on and off buses and being dropped off by parents in and around neighborhoods.

Cyclists who ride a bike to and from school, remember these tips:
· Wear a bike helmet. Helmets can reduce injuries up to 85%.
· Always ride on the right side of the road and obey all traffic rules.
· Watch out for cars coming out of driveways and alleys or pulling away from the curb.
· Walk your bike across the crosswalk.

Pedestrians are advised to practice the following safe-walking behaviors:
· Cross streets at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks. Do not cross mid-block.
· Look for traffic before crossing – look left, then right, then left again.
· Do not play around or push friends while waiting to cross.
· Do not play near driveways, streets or parking lots.

Students who ride a school bus should follow these safety tips:
Be at the bus stop on time. Never run to or from a bus.
Wait at the designated stop and stay away from the street.
Always stand at least 10 feet away from the bus. The driver cannot see you if you are closer.
If something falls under or near the school bus, tell the driver. Never try to pick it up yourself.
Do not throw anything out the windows.
